Divergent Movie Night

With the recent Blu Ray/DVD release of Divergent, I decided to host a movie night party for my friends and I.  I wanted to create a table scape with a section for each of the factions, Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless, that are featured in the Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant books.  I had a great time coming up with ideas for each section from the color scheme to what food and drinks to serve to decorations.  It was a lot of fun and I think it turned out amazing!

Here are the Factions....

For Abnegation I wanted to focus on the simplicity of things...
Gray table cloth, stones, clear serve ware, bread, and water.
Along with a image I found on Tumblr that I had printed then Mod Podged on a canvas.
And of course a "choosing bowl" with stones to complete the look.

I made some Selfless Bread

and some Benevolent Butters.

I also printed some of these labels I found on Bringing Up Burns,
then Mod Podged them on some water bottles.

For Amity I wanted the focus to be warm and friendly...
A bright yellow and red table cloth, a wood plank, a basket of red apples, wood create,
apples chips & dip, hard apple cider, and another Tumblr image.
And the "choosing bowl" of soil.

The Peace Rings are just Apple Chips,

and the Harmony Dip went with them perfectly.

I found these cool labels too on Bringing Up Burns
that I Mod Podged onto some Angry Orchard Hard Cider bottles.

For Candor I did a play on the black and white theme.
I found a black and white stripe cloth, glass, black & white food,
and the Candor image from Tumblr.
The "choosing bowl" full of glass.

I made of these Truth Tidbits which were quite tasty,

and some homemade Probity Pastries.

Erudite was fun to decorate too....
Found a blue and white chevron material, some beakers, plastic glasses,
set up the dictionary (opened up to the definition of Erudite, of course), blue soda,
some healthy snacks, and the Tumblr image.
A bowl of water set out for the "choosing bowl."

The little beakers I found at Hobby Lobby,
which I just drew on the lines and numbers, then filled with some blue wine cooler.

Since the Erudite are all about learning...
I made some brain food, Knowledge Nibbles.

For the non alcoholic drinkers, I got some Jone's Soda that
I wrapped some newspaper around for decor.

And lastly, Dauntless, it was easy to decorate for this one too.
I laid out a black cloth for the table, some black plastic guns and knives,
some paper targets, burgers, chocolate cakes, and a Dauntless Tumblr picture.
The "choosing bowl" was full of stones shaped like coals and some candles.

I got the plastic guns and knives at the Dollar Tree, then spray painted them black.

In the book, the Dauntless ate hamburgers,
so these Bravery Burger Bombs are a play on those.

They also ate chocolate cake, so I had to make some mini Fearless Cakes.

I found these cool labels on Bringing Up Burns
that I printed, then colored in a bit and put on some wine bottles.

I was so happy to discover some temporary tattoos in my new Blu Ray!

I decided to go Dauntless for the party...and a couple days afterward.
(They were stuck on pretty good!)

It was a fun night!
I loved planning it all, the decorations, the colors, the food, the drinks.
And especially getting to spend it with some great friends!
Can't wait to plan my next movie night...

Modified recipe Desserts for Breakfast

Fearless Cakes

What you need:

Cake -
3 cups granulated sugar
3 cups all purpose flour (sifted)
1 cup plus 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
2 1/4 tsp baking soda
3 eggs (room temperature)
3/4 cups vegetable oil
1 1/2 cup whole milk
1 1/2 cup hot coffee (I used decaf)
Frosting -
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
7.5 oz unsweetened chocolate (finely chopped)
12 TBsp unsalted butter (room temperature, cut into small pieces)
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

How to make them:

Cake -
Preheat oven to 350˚F.
Grease and flour the bottom of three 8" round cake pans.
In a bowl, sift together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda, set aside.
In a separate bowl of an electric mixer, beat the eggs a little, then add in vegetable oil and milk, stir to mix.
With the mixer on low, pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mix on low until well combined.
Pour the hot coffee into the batter and mix on medium-low heat until smooth (the batter will be soupy).
Divide the batter, between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out cleanly.
Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
Frosting -
In a saucepan, bring the sugar and heavy cream to a boil over medium heat.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 6 minutes (be careful NOT to let the saucepan overflow).
Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate and butter until they have completely melted.
Stir in the vanilla extract.
Let the frosting cool completely, whisking every now and then during the cooling.
Once completely cool at room temperature, frosting will be spreadable.
Using a round biscuit cutter cut out mini cakes from the larger cake.
Stack two mini cakes, spreading a layer of frosting in between them.
Then frost the outside of the cake, garnish with a Whopper on top.
Take a bite and ENJOY!

A little about Dauntless...

DEFINITION: [Pronounced: Dawn-t-less] Fearless, undaunted. Courageously resolute, especially in the face of danger or difficulty; not discouraged. Undaunted: resolute, especially in the face of danger. Note: Being fearless and being undaunted are two different things.
HISTORYDauntless was a faction formed by those who blamed cowardice for society's problems. The only answer is to face your fears and find bravery.
TRAITSLoud, expressive. Bravery, courage, fighting and physical skills. In charge of security, their primary purpose is to guard the fence that surrounds the city. They began guarding the fence five years prior. Before that they patrolled the factionless sector.
PHYSICAL TRAITS: All-black clothes, tattoos, piercings, unnatural hair colours.
DAUNTLESS INITIATION: Taken very seriously. Transfer initiates have to jump out of the moving train that is transporting them to Dauntless HQ, & onto the roof of a building. They must then jump off a seven-story building without knowing what lies at the bottom.
The initiates are separated during the first stage of initiation. The Dauntless born are trained by Lauren, and the transfers are trained by Four and Eric. Initiates all sleep in one room (girls & boys). 3 stages of initiation:
1Physicalinitiates learn how to fight and are pitted against each other to prove what they have learned. Scored based on their victories and losses.
2Emotional- initiates are put into a simulation where they face their fears. They are not aware it is only a simulation, and have to calm themselves to get out. (The Divergent seem to have a knack for this stage, as they are aware it is not real.)
3Mentalinitiates are put into their fear landscapes, which reaches for every fear within the person subjected to it and creates a simulation in which they must face each one. This time, they are aware that it is not real. Those not in the top 5 of each initiation class typically end up as guards. Those not in the top 10 end up factionless.
RANDOM FACTS: Only faction to use the train. Muffins and toast for breakfast.
RELATIONS: On neutral terms with all factions.
CURRENT LEADERMax, Eric, Four, Tori, Harrison.
