My FANG-tastic Birthday

So, here it is..my True Blood inspired birthday dinner party.  I had a great time celebrating mine and my friend's birthday True Blood style.  Last year my friend Tori gave me the True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps cookbook, so I busted it out for this special occasion.  But, first I needed to set the mood with a few decorations.

I set out a black table cloth, some of my True Blood DVDs,
and even busted out the crystal candle holders which I paired with some red candles.

And of course I had to have some vibrate red roses!

Apothic Red Wine is one of my favorites and it definitely fit the True Blood theme.

As for the dinner menu...

After our FANG-tastic meal, Tori and I exchanged gifts.
(Of course I themed those too)

So....Tori is Team Alcide and I'm Team Eric.
We both had a good laugh when I got her the Funko POP! Alcide Herveaux Figure and the Funko POP! Sookie Stackhouse Figure and she got me the Funko POP! Eric Northman Figure.

Don't they look great together!

She got me this cute Fangtasia Shirt for me too!

And this HUGE stein, which fits my Candy Corn perfectly!

It was a great night!
So excited I got to see my friends, and the kiddos had fun playing together too!
Another AWESOME birthday dinner party!

Food to Sink Your Fangs into....

So, for my Birthday Dinner I came up with this True Blood inspired menu from my True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps cookbook.

Chicken-Fried Love with Gravy

What you need:

Chicken-Fried Steak

Four 6 oz cubed steaks
Salt
Pepper
Cayenne pepper (optional)
1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups vegetable oil

Cream Gravy

5 TBsp unsalted butter
1/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp all purpose flour
2 1/2 cups whole milk
Salt
Pepper
Cayenne pepper (optional)

How to make it:

Chicken-fried steak
Generously season the meat with salt, black pepper, and cayenne (optional).
Put the flour in a shallow dish and season with salt, pepper, and cayenne (optional).
Put the eggs and buttermilk in another shallow bowl and whisk well to blend.
In a large, heavy skillet, preferably cast iron, heat the vegetable oil until it registers 350˚F on a deep-fry thermometer.
Dredge two pieces of meat first in the season flour, then in the egg mixture, then again in the flour, coating them evenly and pressing the flour into the meat with the heel of your hand.
Fry in the hot oil until crisp and golden brown, about 5 minutes per side.
Drain the meat on paper towels and keep warm while you repeat the process with the remaining two pieces of meat.

Gravy
While the steak is frying, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Whisk in the flour and cook, stirring slowing and constantly, until the mixture is smooth and light brown, 4 to 5 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and slowly whisk in the milk.
Cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture is smooth and thick, 8 to 10 minutes.
Season with salt, pepper, and cayenne (optional).
Serve the chicken-fried star smother with the gravy then ENJOY!

Bean There, Done That

What you need:

6 slices of bacon
2 TBsp unsalted butter
1 1/2 cup yellow onion (chopped)
1 lb fresh green beans (trimmed)
2 cups chicken broth
8 oz smoked ham (chopped)
salt
pepper

How to make it:

In a large skillet, fry the bacon over medium heat until crisp.
Transfer to paper towels to drain, and set aside.
Add the butter to the skillet with the bacon drippings, still over medium heat.
When the butter has melted, add the onion, and cook, stirring until the onion is soft and golden, about 10 minutes.
Add the green beans, water, and smoked ham, season with salt and pepper.
Bring to a boil, and reduce the heat to medium-low.
Cover the skillet and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the beans are completely tender, about 45 minutes.
Uncover and continue simmering until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 45 minutes.
Adjust the seasoning.
Crumble the reserved bacon and sprinkle it over the beans.
Serve hot and ENJOY!

Mashed Potatoes
Recipe modified from Pocket Change Gourmet

What you need:

6-8 large white potatoes (peeled and cut into chunks about 1/2 inch in size)
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup salted butter
1/4 cup sour cream
Salt
Pepper
Extra butter to serve on top (optional)

How to make them:

Place potatoes in a large saucepan and add enough water to cover them.
Boil until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Drain and place in a large bowl, mash with a potato masher until large chucks are broken down.
In a microwavable bowl, add the cream, butter, and sour cream.
Heat in the microwave for 1 minute.
Beat potatoes with an electric mixer, gradually adding the cream mixture, until smooth and desired consistency.
Season with salt and pepper.
Add additional butter if desired, then ENJOY!

Corn Bread of Life

What you need:

2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup all purpose flour
1 TBsp plus 1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar (but I used 1 Tbsp, I like it sweeter)
1 large egg (beaten)
1 1/2 cup whole milk
3 TBsp lard or vegetable shortening

How to make it:

Preheat the oven to 400˚F.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
Add the egg and milk, mix well, but do not beat.
Heat the lard/vegetable oil in a 10-inch ovenproof skillet, preferably cast iron, over medium-high heat until almost smoking.
Pour in the batter and cook until the edges begin to turn golden, 3 to 4 minutes.
Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake until the corn bread is golden brown, about 45 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let cool for about 5 minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.
Smear on some butter and ENJOY!

And for dessert...we enjoyed my friend's favorite dessert!  I made a Key Lime Pie to celebrate her belated birthday.  It was AMAZE-BALLS!

Holy Hoecakes

Every year I try and do something fun and themed, for my birthday.  Like last year my friend, Kristi and her family, celebrated my birthday with us Great Gatsby  style.  And it just so happened that my friend, Tori, and her family were stopping by for a night around then.  So it only fitting to throw a True Blood inspired birthday dinner.  Tori and I used to hang out on Sundays, munch on Chipolte or Wing Stop, enjoy a bottle of wine, and marathon binge on True Blood.  Oh, how I miss those days.
But before they arrived, which was later that afternoon, I thumbed through my True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps cook book for a tasty breakfast to make.  I settled for these yummy Holy Hoecakes by Lettie Mae Daniels.  If you are a Trubie, you know exactly who Lettie Mae is, for those of you who don't...then I guess you need to go watch some True Blood.  Anyways...I'm a big fan of Mush, which is fried up polenta.  These were sort of the same thing.  However, you use white cornmeal and it's fried in bacon grease. They are oh so yummy with some maple syrup drizzled on top!

What you need:

1 cup white cornmeal (I only had yellow, so I used that)
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup boiling water
2 TBsp bacon fat (rendered from about 4-5 slices of bacon)
maple syrup for serving

How to make them:

Combine the cornmeal and salt in a medium bowl.
While stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, pour in the boiling water in a steady stream.
Beat until smooth.
Let stand a few minutes.
Heat the bacon fat in a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
When very hot (but not smoking), reduce the heat to medium-low.
For each hoecake, drop about 2 tablespoons of the cornmeal mixture into the skillet and pat gently into a flat circle, about 4 inches in diameter.
Cook several hoecakes at a time until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side, turning with a wide spatula.
Transfer to a plate.
If needed, add more bacon fat to the skillet to make the remaining hoecakes.
Drizzle with maple syrup and serve with some eggs, fruit, and the bacon you fried up, then ENOY!

True Blood Red Velvet Cookies

With the premiere of True Blood Season 5 debuting tonight, I wanted to make something deliciously sweet to bring over to the Grants.  So I searched on Pinterest for some inspirations.....and I found this FangTastic recipe for Red Velvet Gooey Butter Cookies on a a great blog Peace of Cake.  Thought they would be perfect for tonight's festivities.

Here's how to make your own...

Ingredients:
8oz. (1 brick) Cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 c. Butter, softened (1 stick)
1 egg
1 t. Vanilla
1 (18-ounce) box red velvet cake mix
Powdered sugar, for rolling/dusting

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream the cream cheese and butter until smooth.

Beat in egg, then the vanilla.

Beat in the cake mix.
Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to firm up.

Roll batter into tablespoon-sized balls and then roll them in powdered sugar.
Place on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, 2 inches apart.

Bake 12 minutes. The cookies will remain soft and "gooey."

Cool completely and sprinkle with more confectioners' sugar, if desired.

Enjoy!

Deadlocked

I'm a huge Sookie Stackhouse and True Blood fan, so when Charlaine Harris debuted her twelfth novel, Deadlocked, in the Sookie Stackhouse series I just had to go out and buy it!!  I've read all the previous eleven books and look forward to reading this one tonight!  But don't worry, there will be a thirteenth book, the last and final novel in the series.
